How to change from one color of paint to another on the same wall?

My living room to my kitchen is an L shape. The back wall flows straight from the back of the living room to the dining room and then all the way to the kitchen with no brakes in between. There were partitions there separating the rooms but I knocked them out. I don't want the same color too run throughout that floor. Is there any suggestions? Maybe some thing to separate the rooms or some kind of vertical trim so that the rooms can have different color. Thanks. How to change from one color of paint to another on the same wall?
There's no rule to this. At the very least you can just make a straight vertical line between the two colours dividing the rooms. You can do this with a chalk line. That's a piece of string that has been wiped with coloured chalk and has a small lead weight tied to one end. You stand on a stool and press your string on the top of the wall where you want your colour division to start. The lead weight should be a couple of inches from the bottom of the wall. When it comes to a rest it will be at a dead vertical. Get a friend to mark the bottom position with a pencil and then pull the string tight between the top and bottom points. When it is taught you twang it from the centre and you'll have a vertical line in chalk on the wall. Get a straight edge and pencil the line in, then wip the chalk off. Use masking tape along the pencil line to give you a perfect painted edge. Personally I would paint one colour in roughly (the lightest) and then do the chalk line for the second half. How to change from one color of paint to another on the same wall?
I just paint all the walls white.. and one feature wall in a bright color.. like I have lemon yellow in the kitchen, burgundy in the family room and tan in the front room.. point is too much color makes a room look small so unless you want to stripe the wall, which is a heck of a lot of hard work find a wall that doesn't connect to every thing else and give that the color. I use a divider between my kitchen and family room. Its wood and I can put all sorts of family pixs in it.
What color are you thinking to paint your kitchen? And I also assume you want to keep the country blue you have in there now and not change it at all.

You could paint the common wall with a neutral color and then the rest of each room their own colors, if it coordinates and can work with the other room's decor/color scheme. Another thought is to put a chair rail on that wall and paint the lower half of the wall one color, upper half another.

Some other methods to create a dividing 'line': It is possible to put a piece of molding vertically to divide the wall/distinguish the room - then at the top (where the wall meets the ceiling) use a metal decorative 'bracket' to sort of create a doorway. Here's a link to a bracket so you can see what I'm talking about:

You can definitely create a straight line to just change the paint color - or even try a technique to fade one color into another.

Another option is create a fake window - hang floor to ceiling drapes (or fabric) in front of the wall to hide the line where you go from one color to another.

You can also take wood and paint it a neutral color, make it a reasonable width (think 6-12';) and put that in (floor to ceiling) then write sayings on it or use it as something your guests can write messages on, etc. It may not work for your taste/decor, but it's certainly whimsical and brings your family/friends in on things and it's something that will bring a smile to your face when you read it. (You can also use it as a growth chart for kids.)

A floor to ceiling board covered in batting/fabric/ribbon, to create a french memo board type thing - tuck in photos, notes, cards, etc. You can frame the board and that decorate it how you choose. Check out the below links for a visual. Obviously, you'd have to make your own and do it floor to ceiling, but it's a great option. Would look great empty or with your photos/cards, etc.

Personally, while you may not want to keep the wall the same color throughout the rooms, it might be a good option to do so...keeps an open floor plan and you can use bolder accent walls in each room (just keep the colors coordinated for a good flow). For instance a tan for that long wall then a plum in one room for the accent wall, sage for another accent wall...

Best wishes - you have lots of fabulous options and hope more members of the community have even more to offer! I'm sure you'll find the perfect one to make it work and pull it all together!
